The AAFD Reminds Residents to Change Smoke Detector Batteries

November 4, 2016

This weekend, on Sunday, November 6 at 2 AM, Daylight Savings Time ends. While it’s important that everyone remembers to change their clocks, the time change is the perfect reminder for everyone to change their smoke detector batteries. District Assistant Fire Chief Tim Llewellyn states, “Research from the National Fire Protection Association shows that in the United States, approximately 750 civilians unnecessarily die each year in house fires because the smoke detectors that were present did not alert them. Smoke detectors are only as good as the batteries that are in them. Change your clocks, change your smoke detector batteries.” Even if your smoke detectors are hard-wired into the house’s electric system, it’s important to change those batteries too. Chief Llewellyn adds, “Home fires often occur during storms. In the event of a power outage, fresh smoke alarm batteries can mean the difference between life and death.” Remember, smoke detectors can be found not only in living spaces, but also attics and basement utility areas, so it’s important to change those batteries too. To learn more, visit the NFPA’s website (http://www.nfpa.org/public-education/by-topic/smoke-alarms) or contact any member of the Adams Area Fire District for more information.
