Early Morning Crash

Shortly after 4:30 this morning, Company 42, along with Middlesex Township Volunteer Fire Company, Callery VFC , Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company , Harmony Fire District , Allegheny Health Network - Prehospital Care Services Medic 955, Cranberry Township EMS , Quality EMS , Butler County TRT were alerted for a reported 2 vehicle crash involving 2 Refuse trucks. Initial reports were that one of the Trucks involved had crashed into a structure in the 400 block of Mars-Valencia Road and the driver was entrapped. Rescue 42, C-1, and C-2 were all on the way in under 2 minutes of dispatch. R42 was the first arriving unit and confirmed the reports from dispatch.

R42 began assessing the overall scene, determining how to approach this complex scenario. Shortly thereafter additional units began to arrive and plans began to take shape. After some time crews began to make access to the Passenger side of the truck from inside of the structure. Whilst doing so other crews made access to the driver’s side from the outside. Eventually the driver was extricated from the truck and transported to the hospital.

Crews remained on scene for several hours, as State Police conducted their crash re-construction, Heavy wreckers removed the vehicles involved from the scene, and the building was secured and left in a safe manner. Crews operated in total for 9 and a half hours.
