Since 1922, the NFPA has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. Fire Prevention Week was proclaimed a national observance by President Calvin Coolidge in 1925. Fire Departments across the nation provide public education at schools and daycares and many other functions to teach the public how to stay safe from and in the event of a fire.

Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire. This conflagration was so horrific, it attributed to killing more than 250 people and leaving more than 100,000 homeless, along with the destruction of 17,000 structures, scorching a path through more than 2,000 acres of land.

Along with the various presentations we will be conducting throughout the district at schools and daycares, the Adams Area Fire District will be posting a Daily Fire Prevention Topic on our website and across our social media platforms. The first topic will be posted later today. We ask all of our residents to please read these topics and educate themselves on the many various ways to prevent our worst fear here at the AAFD: losing one of our residents to a fire that could have been prevented through simple knowledge. We also ask that you please share these posts and the information within them with all of your friends, family, and loved ones.
