MVC With Three Commercial Vehicles Shuts Down Mars-Valencia Rd
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Captain Doug Mellinger
May 1, 2023

At approximately 1324 this afternoon, Adams Area was alerted along with Stations 19, 16, and 21 for a vehicle accident at the intersection of Mars-Valencia and Downieville Roads, with Adams Twp PD, who happened to come upon the MVC quickly after the collision, on scene reporting entrapment. Captain Mellinger arrived on scene at 1327 to find a tractor trailer, dump truck, box truck, and passenger vehicle involved.

The dump truck traveling north on Mars-Valencia collided with the box truck when it pulled out of Downieville Rd to make a left turn. This collision sent both vehicles into the side of a tractor trailer waiting to make a left onto Downieville Rd from Mars-Valencia, damaging the fuel cell and DEF cell of the tractor trailer, causing a significant leak. The box truck then careened across Mars-Valencia Rd, jumping the parking barriers into the adjacent lot for Austin’s Bleach, coming to rest on an unoccupied Austin’s employee vehicle.

The driver of the box truck was heavily entrapped with significant intrusion of the door and A-post into the passenger compartment, trapping his legs under the dash. He was being attended by an EMT from Quality EMS, whose unit had also happened upon the MVC.

Rescue 42 arrived at 1328 and was tasked with extrication of the driver of the box truck via door removal and dash lift. Quick work by LT Tom Sonni and FF Mike Racz had the patient extricated from the vehicle in under 5 minutes at 1331 and into the waiting Quality EMS medic unit. He was transported to a local trauma center for treatment.

Engine 19 arrived and was tasked with containment of the fluids leaking from the fuel cell of the tractor trailer.

All other drivers were uninjured and refused treatment at the scene. Mars-Valencia Road remained closed from Downieville to Route 228 until heavy wreckers could be brought in to remove all vehicles from the roadway. Fire Police from Station 21 assisted with the closure at Route 228 while Adams Fire Police and PD closed the other end.

The roadway was reopened to traffic at 1440 in the afternoon.
